A "vent hood" is the structure, usually over a stovetop, that gathers heat, fumes and particulate residue, as cooking oil, by means of a fan, and vents it to the outdoors. A vent hood might also filter the air, and in a restaurant or large kitchen, will also collect oil.

A vent hood is a hood with a fan that goes over a stove or cooktop. When turned on it sucks up any smoke and steam from whatever is cooking and vents it to the outside. They often have a built in light as well which illuminates the cooking area nicely.
