A sit in movement is a peaceful protest technique, a non-violent form of civil disobedience where protesters refuse to leave a place which they are protesting.

"Sit-ins" are a type of non-violent protest. Basically you go to a public place and then sit down and refuse to leave. In the sixties, a lot of black people would sit in at restaurants that didn't allow black patrons. They usually got arrested but brought attention to their cause.
