A red shirt freshman is an athlete who the coach selected to sit out during his true freshman year while allowing him to retain his scholarship. As a red shirt freshman, he is in his second year of school, but his first year of athletic eligibility. Typically, and athlete is allowed to red shirt twice.

When a freshman is red shirtted it means that he can take part in all the practices and team events, but cannot play in the games. This is very common it gives young kids a extra year to learn, and develop more skills that they need at the college level.

red shirted on athletic teams means that you are on the team but will have limited playing time, coaches use this to get a feel for abilities of the player.
