a parent should report any and all violations to the probation officer immediately. as long as the violator is living under his/her parents roof they are responsible for their actions. however if they do not live in the same building they should report out of respect for the ruling.

Legally, a parent could be prosecuted if they are neglecting to report that someone is committing a crime or violating probation/ parole, but I don't think the police usually press charges except in extreme cases. Pleading ignorance is a great way to get out of that jam if you are not reporting violations.

I think the parents responsibility is to try to keep their children out of trouble, not rat them out and stuff them back into the system. I would not tell on my child, i would try to get them to overcome the problem and never will i let them rot in jail.

It depends on your jurisdiction. In many states the parents have no legal responsibility to report against their children. But this varies by where you live and you should ask the probation officer. Better question: do they have a moral responsibility to teach their children about taking the consequences, yes.
