Papillon's are often perceived as lap dogs, but have a "big dog" personality. They are protective of their owners and may show fearful aggression to strangers or larger dogs.

While Papillons are generally considered sweet and friendly dogs, they can also be prone to timidity. If not handled appropriately, via positive training and socialization techniques, this shyness can become fear and a fearful dog is far more prone to aggression than a confident one, regardless of size or breed.
