The Harley Davidson "panhead" was the engine produced from 1948 up until 1965. It was the replacement for the previous "knucklehead" style engine. These engine where named after the unique shapes of the valve covers. Being such an old style they aren't popular with today's "recreational" Harley riders. There are companies that still make reproduction versions of these engines.
