I bought a VW Bug used and it looked to be in good shape until I took it to my mechanic who said it needed special care from a mechanic that works on foreign cars, and they take antifreeze that is different from American made cars. Your best bet is to have a mechanic service the car.

try ebay for a bargain workshop manual , another option is to search off road buggy forums as a lot of those guys are hardcore VW enthusiasts

You can always check out a repair book if there is one available for you model. Otherwise the internet can be a big help. There are forums designed for VW's enthusiasts where you can ask questions. The are also VW fan websites that may provide the information you need.
