What is a good protection seal for pastel paintings?

Depending on the pastels (oil or chalk), the answer could vary. I have found that the best way to protect pastels are to use a WORKABLE FIXATIVE. I would test it on a small area before spraying the whole painting.

There are protective spray sealants you can purchase for this. Krylon makes this product in gloss to matte if you prefer a less shiny appearance. Art stores sell products for this, also. Oil pastels require a varnish that is applied several weeks later. When spraying, spray from at least 2' to give the pastel a "set" effect.
