Cracking a rock ledge can be very difficult. This is best accomplished with a rock pick in an area of the ledge already prestressed or cracked.

The best way is with a hammer and a metal chisel. With the chisel you can make the cracks as big or little as you want them and they don't crack the rock in places you don't want.
