Whole raw meat with raw bones, ground up very course along with mixed vegetables and rice work. If you don't like the prep time involved, look for low wheat foods (dogs favour rice) with a relatively high protein:fat ratio. You'll want to have both wet and dry.

The best diet is raw meaty bones, however this is usually impractical and often cost0prohibitive. The next best thing is grain free dog food. There are several brands of grain free food, some to start with are Taste of the Wild, Innova, and Wellness CORE.

Science Diet J/D is good for most German Shepherds because it is good for dogs with arthritis or are likely to develop arthritis. Since German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and spinal arthritis as they get older, you should look for a large breed kibble that has Omega 3 fatty acids and glucosamine to help support your dog's joints.

Dry foods are best to prevent any tooth decay. Just any food with a good amount of nutrients. Average weight of a German Shepard is 77-85 LBS.

Depends on the job required; if it is a working dog, ex: police, k.n.p.c., schutzhund, a high protein or natural diet is required. If the dog has but a daily walk and is home for the rest of the time, a dry kibble food with low fat and protein diet is desirable.
