Ash hair color is cool, so choose highlights that are very natural and have no gold or red tones. This is important for darker people.

Keep the highlights within your natural color tone to make them look more natural. Ash is a cool color, so look for slightly lighter shades of your own hair color in cool color schemes. Stay away from labels that say warm or golden as these tones will look yellow on you.

I have always found that ash color hair looks really good with either brown or strawberry blonde highlights depending on your skin tone.

I think you should stick with streaks, but if you really want to go bold start off slow first. Try the streaks and if you then like it move on gradually to the BOLD look. The brands which you are going to use should be very good. Thus severe damage can be prevented.

Ash is actually a green based blond or brown color, so you will not want to do any highlights with a red tone, it will clash too much. Choose a light blond with a gold base or a beige blond or neutral blond. Ultra Light, Natural, Champagne blond colors are all good choices.
