It depends on why the jaw surgery is needed. Oftentimes not having the corrective surgery can result in a lot of pain later on since jaw problems can cause a host of other problems including headaches and difficulty chewing. Your doctor should be able to tell you what to expect in your case.

If you believe your doctor is incorrect, you can get a second opinion from a doctor you trust. Otherwise, it's best to follow his advice.

The main purpose for corrective jaw surgery is to repair functional problems a patient is experiencing so that their life will be enhanced. Many people experience not only the functional correction, but also physical improvement as well. If the patient chooses not to have surgery, then the misalignment or dental irregularity will remain.

Corrective jaw surgery is meant to realign the jaw, failure in doing so may result in things like headaches, facial nerve damage, possible irregular wearing down of the teeth or muscle injury from stretching or straining.
