The spleen stores blood to provide to the body in an emergency when you lose an abnormal amount. It also gets red of old red blood cells the body no longer needs. White blood cells catch infection there as well.

The spleen is a pretty interesting organ. It provides a reserve of macrophages and red blood cells in case of trauma or injury. It also has immune system functions. Without a spleen, you are considered to have a compromisd immune system.

Although we can live without the spleen it serves two purposes for us. It filters red blood cells and reserves monocytes and is an active immune response.
