Chills are the body's way of warming itself during periods of stress or when it feels cold. An elevated body temperature is not a factor in the chills, although the chills often accompany a fever.

Usually chills without fever mean that a fever is on its way. Non-infectious causes can include an allergic reaction to something, types of medications can cause chills, thyroid dysfunctions cause chills, if you have had a blood transfusion or just plan exposure to a cold environment can cause you to chill.

Chills are cause by rapid muscle contraction and relaxation. What are you doing when these chills come on? This is something you might want to talk with your doctor about to make sure everything is ok. Chills can occur at the beginning sigh of an infection.
