What does it mean if my Sportster's "check engine" light is on?

Most likely its the replace oil light being represented by the check engine light. perhaps it can also be: tranny fluid, spark plug misfire, scheduled maintenance. good luck.

Most likely this is an error in the O2 sensor and just needs to be cleaned or replaced. You can take it to the shop to have them check it.

It could be a variety of things, a lot of mechanics can get the error code from the engine computer to pinpoint the problem. It's probably nothing serious, and can be as simple as a loose or faulty sensor. Take it in somewhere that does free code scans.

A lot of times something as simple as not screwing on your gas cap correctly can make it go on. It could also be a short that could be causing it to go on. I would take it to a shop and pay to get someone to look at it to see if they can see why.
