In gymnastics, "doing the splits" is sinking to the ground with your legs apart, either front-and-back or to either side. In bowling, "splits" are when your ball takes out the center pins but leaves pins standing to either side - very tough to knock down all with your second ball. "A split" is also a small bottle of champagne.

Doing the splits means that you spread your legs as far as you can until your mid section is flush with the ground.

Doing splits is where legs are extended at right angles to the trunk with one being in front and one in the back. There is also a straddle split where the legs are extended straight to the side with the hips square and the legs on the floor. Splits are usually used in sports such as gymnastics or cheerleading.
