Black and white balls are formal and you are supposed to wear black and white. You could wear a plain black or white dress or one with a pattern and black shoes. Your husband should wear a black or white tux with the opposite colored tie and black shoes. Just have fun with it.

A black and white ball is an event were you wear either all black or all white. In this case the lady should wear all white and the gent should be dressed in all black.

I have personally never heard of this type of affair, but judging by the name I would say you wear formal black and white. Though I think a proper thing to do in this situation is ask the host what would be appropriate attire for the event.
