Lots of Indian and Asian recipes call for turmeric. Another name for it is Indian saffron. The only recipe I've ever used it for is Bread & Butter pickles. They are delicious. My mom; however, uses turmeric in lots of her recipes (she's a better cook than I am). She makes a great Couscous Salad and a Curried Acorn Squash.

I usually use turmeric as a spice for chicken, pork and lamb, but not for beef because in my opinion the beef is already a much flavored and very delicate meet that doesn't fit with any kind of spiced and and I prefer not to mix to much thing and the meat to lose it own taste.

If you can get fresh leeves they can be used to wrap food for cooking similar to fresh banana leaves. In small amounts it is used as a coloring agent, yellow, in many foods. In large amounts it has a distinct spicy flavor, think curry.

Adds a pungent flavour to meats or stews, often used to add a yellow colour. A small pinch adds colour without imparting any flavour change. Examples ~ for tofu, dressings, dips.
