As with many animals which hold a special significance for people, cats are called differents names depending on whether it is a male or female cat. Male cats are called "toms" or "tomcats". This name is in general use and familiar to most speakers of English. Female cats are referred to as "queens". This name is slightly less well-known.

A male cat is a tom. There is no colloquially accepted term for females. If you tell your friends you have a queen at, as lorel proffered, home they'll assume you've been subletting to homosexuals.
