All publishing in the U. S. is owned by one of three conglomerates that are in it for profits. Children's titles are at the bottom of the list unless celebrity-written.

Marketing is even more difficult with children's books, since adults either make the purchase or determine if the child can buy what they want. Children's books need to be heavier on graphics or pictures and have fewer words. Write for the age level that will be reading it. Keep the vocabulary simple.

It is very difficult to get started as a children's author. There is a lot of competition in the field. The first step is to find a good publishing agent.

One particularly important thing to know about publishing children's books is consulting the annual edition of the Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market, published by Writer's Digest Books. This book will help you identify which publishers you should consider sending your materials to and how best to go about doing it.

You need to know that it is, besides poetry, the most difficult of any genre to get published. Publishers expected authors to bring along ready-made marketing platforms, i.e., celebrities.
