If the filling goes near the root then you may have some discomfort for a few days to a few weeks, but if the tooth is sealed it will last.

The point to be noted in deep-seated tooth fillings are that they are very close to the pulp chamber. So,care should be taken while placing the fillings. Before placing a filling either a cement base or a cement lining should be ideally placed so that there is no direct contact with the pulp.

The bad news is it hurts a lot more to have a deep tooth filling than a more cosmetic, superficial filling. The dentist will be touching the root of the tooth, which hurts. The good news is that with having a deep tooth filling, you will likely never have to worry about that tooth needing to be filled again.

Often times if a filling is needed really deep, especially if it's been drilled and filled before, the dentist will just opt for a root canal. If the nerves are out the tooth cannot rot anymore. So basically this procedure is done in order to save the tooth. Most people are under the idea that it hurts, but it doesn't.

Deep tooth fillings just that, deep. They are closer to the nerve and go into deeper layes of the tooth, which requires good local anesthetic control for pain. This procedure is best also carried out with the use of Nitrous oxide, which is a generally analgesic and should help control the otherwise excruciating pain you are going to feel.

If you have a deep filling there is a chance that the filling can be close to the nerve and that you will end up needing a root canal and a crown anyways. Usually it is better to get a silver filling instead of a white one just in case you have to have more work done on that tooth.
