Either send a letter back as to why you cannot attend on that date and thus the date needs to be rescheduled or arrange transportation to court.

You need to answer the summons by sending a response to the court and to the company suing you. You have 29 days from the date it was served upon you.

The summons should have all the information you need on it. They usually give the date you have to reply to the summons along with what courthouse you need to go to. It should give you an option to disagree with the petitioner along with an option to work out payment arrangements. That can vary from state to state.

A summons means that you are required to go to court. You may have also received a complaint by the party that is sueing you. You will have a very short time to reply. You should seek the assistance of an attorney, especially if the other party has one.

The exact procedures vary from state to state and even from court to court. If possible, you should talk to a lawyer as soon as possible. You have to file some sort of response, usually called an answer, in which you briefly state your defense. If you do not answer, you can have a default judgement taken against you.

There should be some sort of instructions included in the summons. If there are no instructions for further action, you should call the courthouse to clarify what action, if any, must be taken. In most cases, however, you do not need to make an official response. You simply show up in court on the appointed day ready to argue yourcase.
