Thomas Heyward, Junior (note the spelling) was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence. He was born on July 28, 1746 in St. Luke's parish, South Carolina, the son of a wealthy planter. He was educated as a lawyer, completing his studies at the Middle Temple in London, England.

Thomas Heywood was an English playwright of the 1600s. Thomas Heyward, Jr. was a politician and Congressional delegate from 1775-1778, which is why he signed the Declaration of Independence.
