The federalists believed that the Federal Government should be stronger than the individual state governments. The Federalist Papers were written to gain support for this viewpoint, and were very influential.
Supporters of a central "federal" government wrote articles that appeared in newspapers throughout the various states to overcome fears that citizens would lose rights under a federal government.
