The earth shook on December 24 2004 by an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 thus being the second most devastating quake ever recorded on a seismograph. It also had the longest duration of faulting eve observed lasting 9 minutes. Its deadly force caused tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean along with killing 230,000 people.

The boxing day earthquake hit Sumatra and the Andaman Sea to its north, December 26, 2004. It registered 9.3 magnitude. It was the second-largest earthquake since seismographs were invented in 1900. It triggered a large tsunami off the coast of of Sumatran. It washed away whole cities in Indonesia. Approximately 240,000 people died and 47,000 from the tsunami.
