Women wore pedal pushers and tied scarves around their necks. Men often wore jeans and a white tee shirt. Both boys and girls wore penny loafers.

Men would never wear jeans and t-shirt in public. T-shirts were strictly undershirts for men. A plaid shirt, both for men and boys, was the normal casual attire. There was a trend of the Jeans/t-shirt "Greaser" look, but despite what you see in movies, this was VERY RARE.  add a comment

In girls and guys fashion, you would see clean cuts and proper attire. For girls it was known as the "poodle skirt" era, matched with scarves. You could also see pedal pushers, and nice tennis shoes. In men, there were jeans, nice clean white shirts, and penny loafers.

Women's clothing in the 1950s was often dresses with petticoats and girdles underneath. The freedom from girdles didn't come until the 1960s. Men's clothing wasn't too different from today.
