What did Gandhi mean when he said, "Eye for an eye and the world will end up blind"?

First off it was spelled Ghandi, and he meant that if you seek revenge for something that someone did to you, you will end up with problems. Also, if we all take an eye for every eye we lose, pretty soon we won't be able to distinguish ourselves from the rest of society.

He was a proponent of peace, and in this statement was saying that if everyone retaliated with violence against people who wronged them, everyone would be worse off.
