birth control

Question by  Kristlove (3)

What could cause heavy bleeding five days into the starting of a new birth control rx?

However - 5 days after taking the birth control, I started my period again and I had it for about 4 days until it stopped again. It was VERY heavy unlike the usual "spotting" that can happen. I am very sexually active. What's going on?

The body does go thru changes while going on birth control. Experience bleeding that is heavy as a regular period is normal as its your body getting used to the birth control. If you are unsure consuly a doctor maybe they can change dose or recommend a new product. More than likely it your body adjusting.

You are placing a very powerful dose of drug in your body each day and it is also a new prescription. Each person reacts in different ways and it simply means your body is becoming familiar with the dosage and this is a side effect. It will correct itself soon.

It could be that your body is having a different reaction to the hormones in the pill than expected, hence your body thinks that it needed to get rid of another egg. Though, you should go to your doctor for a professional medical opinion. Doesn't hurt to be safe.

Some birth controls do cause light to heavy bleeding for up to several months into the rx regimen. Prescriptions such as Lybrel or Seasonique which are designed to stop the period altogether are especially notorious for bleeding. It is changing the natural schedule of your cycle to the new one.

Any irregular bleeding you should consult with a doctor, especialy when starting a new prescription of birth control medication. It could be a cause of a change in your hormones and or not taking your meds at the same time every day.
