This is usually caused by a cavity or damage on the tooth's surface. If you have a visible spot on a tooth, see a dentist immediately.

Cavities. The first sign on a cavity is a small black spot on your tooth. That spot eventually turns into a gaping hole.

The black spot on your tooth could be the tooth beginning to die. Depending on how nig the spot is, it could also just be a cavity starting. Either way you need to go see a dentist so they can determine the problem and get you the proper treatment to fix it.

A black spot on the tooth may be due to various reasons. Firstly it could be tooth decay which has just started. Generally the cavity starts at the top then penetrates inside. It could be tartar deposits on the gum margin extending towards the tooth and inside the root. It could be due to calcium deposits also.
