car repairs

Question by  lleavid (16)

What could be wrong if my car starts, but idles roughly and then dies?

Every time I start my car, the engine struggles to turn. It will start, but then jerk or shake, and eventually die. What could be wrong?

It sounds as if fuel isn't getting through properly. It could be anything from needing a new fuel filter or fuel pump. The other possibility is that it has bad plug/plug wires but I'm just sensing that it sounds like something to do with the fuel. You should definitely give a mechanic a call.

A couple of things might be wrong. The car could be starved for gas (check fuel line, fuel filter), or have a bad air mix (check air filter, fuel injectors), or the pistons aren't getting a regular strong spark (check spark plugs, distributor cap, and plug wires). If these don't help, get somebody to check your cylinder compression.

I agree with the posts that mention poor gas/air mixtures. Try one of them new cars with fuel injection - it's the bee's knees!

It may not be getting any gas. Make sure your fuel pump is working properly and if it check your injectors.

you need to check the computer in the car to see if there is a sensor or relay that is not working. the only way to check that is to use a scanner.

I would double check all the connections under the hood including the battery. You might also want to look for vaccumm leaks and see if your IAC (idle air control) is adjusted correctly.
