This pain may be coming from a pinched nerve, muscle spasm, or even a strain. More than likely the sharp piercing pain is a pinched nerve. You can get a pinched nerve from a previous bad accident, sleeping wrong continuasly, or any repetitive awkward motion. You can use ice to soothe the pain until you get to a doctor.

The sudden piercing pain means that you have probably developed some form of inflammation in the muscle from either overwork or injury. Anti-inflammatory medicine will ease the pain until you can get an MRI from a doctor.

You could hae over exerted the muscle. This could lead to a pulled muscle or a muscle sprain. See a doctor to ensure that a ligament was not injured.
