You most likely burned an area of your tongue without realizing it, bit your tongue, cut it and developed a sore or it developed after you ate something too spicy or overly sour. It is nothing to worry about as taste buds generally replace themselves once a week. Just make sure not to eat anything that would further irritate it.

You may have irritated your taste bud by eating something that is too hot. If you burned it, it is likely to swell and be sore. Also if you have eaten acidic foods such as hot peppers or bitten your tongue that can also happen.

One possible cause is an infection of the taste buds. For other people salty foods can make the taste buds hurt. For some people they eat food that is too hot. Another possible cause is the ph of the body is out of wack.
