What could be the cause of a five year old with lower leg pain?

My five year old is having lower leg pain and I would like to know what is causing it.

There are a lot of possibilities, most of which are nothing to worry over. The most likely problem is that he pulled or strained his calf muscle while playing. This will heal on its own. He could also have gotten a bug bite (this would probably include a mark). Other, less likely, possibilities include shin splints.

This is often called "growing pains", also known as "shin splints". Your child is in a growth spurt so rapid that the bones are stretched with micro-cracks that hurt, especially at night. You can help prevent it by giving him more calcium.
