The most likely cause is you may have twisted your ankle and caused a strain/sprain injury. You may have also had trauma to the area, be it significant or a minor bump. This can cause inflammation and in turn pain. Have your doctor examine it if pan doesn't resolve in a few days, or it begins to get worse.

If you have "flat feet" or "fallen arches" then over pronation of your foot could be the answer. Over pronation causes the foot to roll inward too much with each step putting the top of the foot and the ankle under stress. If this is true in your case then you can get relief with arch supports for your shoes.

This could indicate poor circulation due to occlusion or dislodging of a local artery/vein, or nerve. This may also be an early sign of peripheral neuropathy associated with diabetes.

It could be because your shoe is too tight, and the top of the shoe is squeezing your foot too hard. It could also be because you have somehow injured that area without even realizing it. See if the pain will subside after a relaxing the foot a few days.

Foot pain can be caused by trauma, such as fractures or sprains, or by nerve damage from shoes. Other causes of foot pain include arthritis, bone spurs, and ganglion cysts.

The most likely culprit for pain at the top of your foot is poorly fitting shoes. There are a number of ways to address this. Try wearing only good quality running shoes for a few weeks and see if that helps. If it does, try getting inserts made by a qualified foot specialist to put in all your shoes.

This could be caused by many things. You might have a bone spur. Bone will overgrow and produce abnormal protrusions on top of the foot.
