What could be causing outlook 2003 not to close?

I have hit the minimize button, given the command to close and tried to exit the program yet it will not close.

Interestingly, Outlook issues are often caused by Microsoft Word. Check to see if Word is set to be the default html viewer for websites. If this is the case, try turning off HTML in your emails or choosing a different viewer. At last resort, perform an office diagnostic and repair from the help menu.

It is possible that your installation of Outlook has become damaged. Fortunately there is a Repair function built into Office 2003. Just open Outlook, click on Help, and select Detect and Repair to run the repair tool.

There may be some program still running even after you close outlook 2003. The best method to stop it is by closing the program using Taskmanager. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and in the processes tab find the name that is being used by outlook 2003. Right click on it and then press END PROCESS.

Outlook may be set to send/receive all mail on exit. If you are offline to your mail server, this often causes it to hang and just not close for a long time. It could also be trying to clean out the deleted files folder or synchronize with an account that is not responding.

In a few rare cases, this may be because Outlook is trying to fetch your email. Try with your internet connection off. If it still doesnt work, then there may be some addons that are causing outlook to stall. Disable all addons and try again.

If it is the only application behavig this way, the problem is most likely found to be an network related problem, as the application does a system call that can not be completed. Check your network connection/card drivers/ and any software related issue (like firewalls)
