I'd recommend maple hardwood flooring. The light color will lighten the room, and allow a dark area rug. Try getting slightly wider boards than normal, 3 or 4 inches, run in the longer direction. Also, run 3 to 5 lengths of boards along the wall meeting the butted end of the boards to give the room a framed look.

With lighter walls, darker wood flooring normally looks better. This is because lighter colors make the room look bigger, but by pairing it with a darker wood flooring, it makes the color more vibrant. It should run the longer length of the living room - this is the traditional way.

The color of wood flooring depends on your home, how much light you get, what other decorations you have, etc. I prefer longer length boards for wood flooring. If you have light color walls you may want to get your floors to match other wood in your living room.

You should think about how much traffic this area will get and how often you can clean. A darker floor color will show less dirt. The flooring should run the longer length.
