What can you tell me about skin parasites on cats?

if the cats skin is flaky and hair is coming off it could be mange mites. This condition could be spread to other pets so should be taken to a vet for treatment immediately. If the skin has sores could be a range of conditions from genetics to adrenal disorders.

The most common external parasites are fleas, ticks, and (ear) mites. There are pills and topical medications that you can use to treat the parasites (capstar, revolution, advantage, to name a few), but if it has developed to the point of causing a skin condition you need to see a vet.

A well taken care of cat, kept indoors (you SHOULD train your cat to stay indoors) should have no problems. You can see, and treat for fleas. If you have any other problem, you need to see a vet. It could be a feeding problem, allergy or infestation.

Several different types of parasites - lice, fleas,ticks, harvest mites("chiggers", appear as clusters of orange-red specks, close clusters usually on ear flaps/between toes), mange mites, cheyletiella mites ("walking dandruff"). Another skin condition: Miliary dermatitis - crusty lesions usually appear around the base of the tail, neck and spine.
