The horizontal and vertical components of velocity in projectile motion are always independent. The horizontal component is always constant. Kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * velocity^2

During projectile mtion, the vertical velocity changes while the horizontal velocity remains constant. As the projectile rises, gravity does work on the projectile, causing the vertical velocity to decrease. As the projectile falls, the vertical velocity increases again, causing the kinetic energy to increase. The horizontal velocity does not change.
