Crowns and fillings are two very different things. The filling can have a problem if it goes to deep and proper treatments aren't applied over the areal where the canals for the roots begin. A crown will only have a problem if the underlying structure is exposed thus resulting decay.

Crowns come in different materials because they cover up the fillings that the doctor makes. The crowns make the tooth look more real and is better off protecting your filling.

I have had crowns dislodge for no apparent reason before. Apparently it is sometimes difficult to keep them attached to softer teeth. I have been told, also, that it is sometimes the adhesive that is to blame for the mishaps. With fillings, I have had better luck, but again there is the downside of the filling material containing toxic substances.

Especially in those situations where a large portion of your tooth will need to be replaced by a dental filling, the circumstances associated with the process of placing the filling might be less than ideal. You cannot expect the filling your dentist creates to provide the same longevity or precise tooth restructuring that a dental crown can offer.
