As someone who has had hypothyroidism her entire life, I have dealt best with birth control containing low doses (or continuous release) of hormones. The best type (and what I've been using for 3+ years) is Nuvaring. Your doctor would be able to discuss all of your possible options with you.

Birth control is still effective for preventing pregnancy for people with hypothyroidism. Taking any birth control pill, patch, or shot wouldn't have any positive or negative effects. Just let your doctor know about your concerns.

There are some people who believe that taking birth control will lead to hypothyroidism, in other words, that they will gain weight. This is usually not true.

If you have a history of hypo or hyper thyroidism it is best to discuss it with your doctor about what method of birth control is safest. Certain pills and the depo-provera shot can have an effect on your thyroid and may cause severe mood swings.

Birth control means restriction of the number of offspring by means of contraceptive measures and hypothyroidism is the condition where there is a diminished production of thyroid hormone.
