Increasing fluids and fiber would be the best bet. You would want to avoid using medications if at all possible just due to the strain on the kidneys. But stool softeners are generally safe with litle to no side effects.

Fluids and prune juice can't be used by many on dialysis due to fluid restriction and potassium in the prune juice.

Because dialysis is so strenuous on the body, the patient should not take any more medications, including stool softeners. In this case, it should be an all-natural remedy, like prune juice. Prune juice can naturally loosen the bowels and relax the body without giving the patient diarrhea.

They could still take softeners, but they could also eat more fiber. They could take things like metamucil. The two together might produce more stool that is easier to pass.
