Let's face it anything planted in August will not do well. However, perennials will recover the best in August. A perennial plant will flourish the following year with little attention on your part. Depending on color or taste a brown-eyed susan ( rudbeckia ) or a purple cone flower (echinacea ) will be quite rewarding the following spring.

Although I believe August is not the best time for planting in New Jersey you could successfully seed beets and lettuces and could also transplant cabbage and broccoli.
