What can I expect from the side effects of anesthesia several days following a procedure?

I had ankle surgery three days ago and am feeling disconnected still.

It is rare to feel side affects from general anesthesia after a day or two following surgery. If you feel lightheaded or nauseous after three days, it would be a good idea to contact your doctor in case you have a sensitivity to the drugs you were given.

This is highly unusual. It could be the effect of something other than the anesthesia, but you need to discuss it with your doctor as soon as possible.

You can expect feeling of numbness to the affected area and sometimes there may be a little loss of sensation. Do no panic when you experience this because this will usually subside in the consecutive weeks. However, if it would still persist then report it to your doctor immediately.

This is very common. It can take several days for the anesthesia to fully wear off. How fast the drugs will wear off depends on a lot of factors including how long you were under and your age.

I have had surgery with anesthesia 3 times and each time I have felt fine (except for pain from the surgery, of course) right away. I would say if you're feeling disconnected, or you feel like things aren't just right, to call your doctor and ask for her to take a look.
