There is probably a bearing that is loose inside and needs to be replaced. Remove the gear shifter from the transmission and look for a loose bearing inside. Once that is replaced, you can then install the gear shifter back onto the transmission. Replace and trim or covers you had to remove to get at the gear shifter.

The quickest way to tighten the manual gear shifter is to replace the booger bushings, this will prevent slop by tightening the shifting linkage up. If this is a cable shifter, replace you shift linkage cable.

What you want to do is replace your shifter bushings. If you go underneath the truck and see where the shifter connects to the linkage there is two bushings there, then follow the linkage up near the cv axle and there are more bushings up there to replace, this will get rid of shifter slop.

a mechanic needs to check and see if the shifter is loose where it bolts on or if the shifter is worn out.
