Make sure that the exhaust has no leaks, and your mufflers are to your states regulation. Smog control is a huge problem and shops specialize in outfiting cars with replacements.

Make sure you have a good gas cap. Change the air and fuel filter. Also, run premium gas with an octane booster when you run it through for the test.

You can make sure that all the emissions systems are working properly on the vehicle. These include the EVAP system, EGR, and any catalytic converter(s) on the car. If any of these systems are failing, a Check Engine Light will be present. You can scan these codes or have them scanned and then fix any issues.

Make sure the vehicle does not have any illegal modifications and that it has been serviced regularly. If the vehicle is up-to-date you shouldn't have any problems!

You can fix a lot of these things yourself. While you're at the auto parts store, get a repair manual. Replace the pvc valve and have the egr valve replace. make sure the vacuum hoses connect to egr valve and pvc replace. change air filter. all those things will cause high emission if not working properly. cause you to fail smog test.

Perform regular maintenance like changing oil, spark plugs, seals and gaskets on a regular basis. Also, do not install after market exhaust components especially the catalytic converter, as non OEM components will allow more smog to escape.

Make sure the exhaust system is properly working and there are no rust holes or cracks in any seals or pipes. You can have a mechanic check this out prior to taking it in for a smog check just to be on the safe side. You could also buy a new exhaust system!

You will need to make sure that your fluid liquid is full and does not have any obvious problems. This is not normally a high check for your inspection usually.
