Make sure that the car is in the proper gear. Check the transmission fluid which may not allow the car to go into drive if the fluid is too low. Make sure the parking brake is off. Is the car not starting? Check the electrical if that i the issue because that may be do to a bad battery/alternator.

It sounds like you have a transmission problem. You can either rebuild it yourself, install a new one, or spend a little less and get a used transmission out of a similar car.

First see if it will go into reverse. If it goes into reverse and the shifter can move through all the gears, then car must be towed to transmission shop and diagnosed.

In order for you to get your Nissan Maxima to go forward, you need to check your neutral switch that is located right next to the engine, however, another problem that could cause that is micro switch shift lock, which is usually located in the interior right under transmission shift.

I would suggest that you check your accelerator cable. I had the same problem in my altima so I popped the hood and sure enough the boot on the end of the rod wause not connected.
