If the key or spring underneath is broken, try taking the key cover off and pressing the button underneath. If you run a Windows OS, use the the Character Map application. The Character Map can be found under Programs > Accessories > System Tools on most Windows computers.

One option would be to find a webpage, or an earlier typed document, and highlight and copy an existing asterisk. Once you have done this paste the asterisk into place in new documents. A second option would be to simply type "asterisk" where ever you decide that an asterisk is needed.

You may be able to un-stick it by pressing down on it firmly. Otherwise, pop the key cap off gently and use pressurized air to blow away any gunk.

*This technique can be done with any key on the keyboard, off the keyboard, and that can be found in plain text anywhere on the internet. All you must do is find somewhere (a website, or somewhere else) where this symbol is being used. Highlight JUST that symbol and click copy. Press CTRL + V (paste) whenever the symbol is needed.

Take the key off and blow some air into the area. There might be something making it stick. Or take Q-tip and dip in alcohol lightly and clean area.
