The inflammation in tonsils can be alleviated naturally with gargling warm salt water. Garlic and ginger herbs made into a tea has oils and chemicals that reduce the inflammation. Lemon and honey tea can also help with the pain.

A doctor would probably take your tonsils out. If you're in adult, the doctor won't take them out unless you have lots of infections or cancer. You might be given an antibiotic.

If your tonsils are hurting very badly, you should make an appointment and have it checked out by your doctor.

I would go the doctor and make sure they are not infected. It is quite possible they will need to be removed by an extremely common surgery known as a tonsillectomy.

Most tonsil pain will go away with some time. To alleviate the pain, take OTC painkillers such as Tylenol or Advil and avoid foods that will aggravate the area. Eat and drink soothing foods and beverages, especially cold things. Avoid acidic foods or drinks such as oranges and orange juice.

You need to see a doctor to rule out strep throat or other infection. Antibiotics may be prescribed but if infection persists or becomes chronic, your tonsils may have to be removed to prevent recurrence. Until you see your doctor suck throat numbing lozenges and gargle with warm salt water.
