Use a stiff brush to clean gaps in brick. Mix a small batch of mortar according to manufacturer's instructions. Dampen the section (3 ft. x 3 ft) of brick to be repaired.Use a trowel to fill vertical gaps with mortar then fill horizontal gaps. Smooth the new mortar with a finishing tool called a brick jointer. It's that easy.

These gaps should be sealed to ensure the watertight exterior. You can seal them with mortar mixed to match the current mortar, or your can use caulking.

I have sealed my exterior brick with Thompson's water seal. It is very easy to apply. I used an empty weed killer spray bottle filled with the water-to-sealant mixture as per the manufacturer's directions. Once the sealer has dried, the brick surfaces seem to have a slight sheen to them.
