This happens quite a bit especially with documents that are sent to you from another person and they have forgotten to re-save the document with a different name or they have set it as a read only document. Usually renaming the document yourself and then saving it again works wonders.

A locked document could be due to password protection from file creator, or your Word 2003 application is not activated, or the document is protected (mark as read-only), or if it is shared over a network, another user might be still editing the file. If all these fail, it could be the file was not properly closed previously.

If a Word 2003 Document is locked in most cases you can't unlock it without requesting the source code from the original author. At best you can re-write it by hand and save it.

In the file menu, select permissions. Can you change the permissions to unrestricted ? Request access or the password from the original author to unlock the sheet.
